It can be both exhilarating and terrifying to attend college. For many students it will be a time of learning, not only in college, but in life skills as well. It can be difficult being on your own while continuing your education, but that’s what college is.
When you go to college, bring along shampoo, conditioner, soap and so on. These are necessities that you will require each and every day. For the sake of economy, try to purchase in bulk.
Remember to watch your food intake. The concept of Freshman 15 is no myth. Make sure to be mindful of your eating. Try not to eat too many on the go foods like pizza or fast food. Though such items are quick and inexpensive, but they do not offer the nutrients you really need.
Set aside enough time to study your course materials on a daily basis. Invest time in your college years, and you will reap excellent benefits. It is okay to socialize, but treat college as if it were a job. You will make more money and get a better job if you do well.
Have your testing materials handy when it is time to test. Forgetting a calculator or your notes can mean the difference between passing and failing. Usually, the teacher won’t have extra, so bringing your own is crucial.
Participating in clubs and other activities may be beneficial. When you take part in activities of interest to you, your resume will be enhanced when you enter the working world. Do not do so much that your grades suffer, however.
Where you sit in class might have a bearing in how well you do. Rather than arriving to class right on the dot and being forced to sit in the back, arrive early and sit in the front. This lets you speak to the teacher easily and also hear better.
Eat a quality breakfast before a big test in the afternoon. You can even eat light; try some fruit or yogurt. If you’re stomach is rumbling while you’re taking a test, you’re going to be distracted. By eating at least a small meal, you will be better able to focus on the test and recall all of the information that you studied.
Get at least one of your general education requirements done and finished in your first semester. If you have to have the class for your requirements, get it over with so you can take classes you like down the line. Not only that, but do you really wish to be the lone senior surrounded by freshmen?
Visit the career office at your college to find part time work. Not only will the career center help you get a job when you graduate, the center also posts part-time jobs on and off campus that may fit your schedule.
Take frequent breaks. While studying is vital, you must remember that you need breaks during your sessions. For every one hour that you spend studying, give yourself a short break of at least ten minutes. Make a schedule and abide by it.
Understand plagiarism and avoid it. While in college, you can expect to write a number of papers. Make sure you know proper citation in order to avoid unintentional plagiarism. Professors check for plagiarism, so only turn in work that you have done yourself.
You should always rewrite your paper befopre turning it in. You need to take the time to properly revise it. Rewrite it if need be. After you complete the second draft, edit that one. This will ensure that you turn in the best paper possible.
If you cannot decide between multiple majors, take the introductory classes in each one. You will get a feel for each major and be better able to determine which is right for you. Plus, you’ll be earning credits that will count toward your major, and possibly enough credits in another subject to earn a minor as well.
One option could be to take your first two years of study at a junior college. It is a cheaper way to finish some general education classes. You can then transfer your credits to a university afterwards. If 4-year schools are too pricey, this makes a lot of sense.
While your co-op position may not apply to your major, still give it a good effort. Any kind of work experience is positive and you will get good letters of recommendation from your employers. If you do well, it will help you monetarily as well as give you something good to put on your resume.
Do you already play sports and wish to keep playing them when you get to college? Try calling the college and speaking to the coach of your sport. When you let them know you’re coming, they’ll be ready for you. This might even help you get a scholarship.
Living on campus is a possibility you might automatically think isn’t an option for you if you have kids to take care of. It may not be. There are a lot of college campuses that provide family housing. Many universities now realize that students are coming to them at all times of their lives. But be sure to ask early on about family housing; it could fill up fast.
Taking classes outside of your major is usually required. Try your best even though you have little interest in them; it is better to try your hardest.
